Consultation Visit:
This is a complimentary visit and a time to discuss any questions around midwifery care.
Complete Pregnancy Care: If you are seeking a out-of-hospital birth, then you can have your complete prenatal, labor, birth, and postpartum care with a licensed midwife!

Prenatal Care:
The prenatal time period is a time in which we build a relationship of mutual trust. Prenatal consultation visits are typically one hour long, and include the gathering of the mother and baby’s vitals. This includes blood pressure, weight, urinalysis, and a fetal heart check. Depending on the gestation of the pregnancy, we may offer bloodwork and lab-work. You will always be provided information so that you can make an informed choice around any testing. Most labwork can be done in the office, while ultrasounds are referred out.

The majority of our visit is listening to you- directly asking you how you are feeling and taking the time we need to answer questions and share information. We do believe that the focus of midwifery care is wellness- and it is during this time that we may discuss aspects of preventative care, including nutrition, exercise, childbirth and postpartum preparation. Visits also include connecting with your baby.

Care usually begins at the end of the first trimester, around 10 weeks of pregnancy. We see each other every 4 weeks until the 7 month of pregnancy. After 28 weeks, we see each other every 2 weeks until 36 weeks. At this time, there is one homevisit, where the birth team comes to your home. Following 36 weeks, we have weekly prenatal visits until it is time to attend the birth.

Birth:
This involves providing labor support, guiding, witnessing, and monitoring as needed for labor and delivery in a home or birth center setting. Birth care involves immediate postpartum care and assessment (see below). Amma Midwifery can provide midwifery care and support in the following areas:

  •  Homebirth: Many people choose home for different reasons, including the freedom to listen to your body and baby, minimum interventions, and welcoming the baby in a gentle way. Home is defined by you- and can be in any place where you feel safe and comfortable.
  • Birth Center: There are a couple of local birth centers in the South Broward/Miami area in which I hold privileges at if home is not an option for you.
  • Waterbirth: You have the option of laboring and birthing in water in both home and birth center settings.. Waterbirth has been shown to have many benefits for both the birthing person and baby. For more information on the benefits of water birth, please check out www.waterbirth.org.
  • VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Cesarean) : Amma Midwifery can attend the births of women and people who have had a previous c-section. For more information on VBAC, please see http://vbacfacts.com/ as well as the community page for resources.

Postpartum Care:
Immediately after the birth- your birth team stays several hours to ensure that you and your baby have transitioned well. We also support you in breastfeeding. I return to your home after the birth to do 3-4 postpartum visits on the following schedule: 1 day post delivery, 3-5 days post delivery, 10 days, and 3 weeks. You will come to the office for the 6th week visit.

Well care (Well woman):
Midwifery care can also include the time outside of pregnancy- including your annual visits. This includes regular pap-smear exams- the screen for cervical cancer, cultures, and basic blood work. I can also provide resources for your options around contraception.

Fertility Support:
These services provide support for you learning about your body and menstrual cycle. The knowledge you acquire about your body and cycles, can support you as a form of birth control or to nourish your fertility. Information and resources will also be provided from a holistic perspective, including nutrition, lifestyle, herbs, and other modalities. If your journey to increased fertility and pregnancy leads you to consider alternative insemination and home insemination, I am happy to schedule an appointment to discuss resources and your options.

All services and care are offered in a sensitive and respectful manner- honoring all aspects of yourself, including cultural, racial, gender, socioeconomic realities and identities.
